Q: Why should I hire a professional make-up artist for my wedding?
A: Makeup for photography is different from your everyday makeup. A licensed, insured, professional like myself understands camera, lighting and reflected light, that is, not just the way you look when seen with the eye, but the way your makeup will translate when the light bounces off your face and is refracted back to the camera in your photos and video. Understanding this, I bring out and play up your good features, correcting and changing face shapes and proportions using cosmetics. The techniques I use, come from my training in advanced bridal makeup and multi-media makeup as well as my experience in photography and TV/Film. These techniques will dimensionalize your face for a 2 dimensional medium (the camera has only one eye and no depth perception). This assures your face won’t appear "flat" in your photos. Hiring a professional makeup artist with the knowledge of creating these cosmetic illusions for the camera, even lightly applied, will insure that your photographer will capture your most beautiful self. My makeup application can be very subtle and natural; or bold and glamorous; providing you with a flawless, glowing complexion and confidence in your appearance on your special day. When it comes to bridal hairstyling, again a professional will use products and techniques to get the most desired look and long lasting style. I will ensure that the hairstyle will look full, balanced and proportionate at any angle the camera may capture!
When it comes to hiring a beauty expert for an important event like your wedding day, I truly believe you get what you pay for. When you hire me, you are hiring an experienced, licensed professional, that comes to you, and is an expert in bridal hairstyling and make-up artistry. The level of skill and expertise that you can expect, is far superior to hiring your sister, your cousin, or a cosmetic sales-person from the mall. The pictures in your wedding album will last a lifetime, you will cherish them forever. Don't trust your look to just anyone, hire a professional who is experienced in bridal beauty and can give you the look you've been dreaming of!
Q: What is the difference between you and another makeup artist that charges much less than you? Why should I spend the extra money, aren't all makeup artists the same?
A: Again.....You get what you pay for! Please beware of the makeup artist charging much lower rates than the market standard. My rates are comparable to any other makeup artist with the training, experience and quality level of work that I do. A makeup artist that charges low prices are usually very inexperienced and may not know certain techniques to bring out your best features or make your makeup or hair last all day/ night. They have less experience with different face shapes and lack the skills to bring out your particular features. A lot of times they only know one or two different styles of makeup and may be a lot heavier handed, not knowing how to blend the makeup for a beautiful polished finish. Or they most likely use cheap products that will fade after a few hours and not show up as well in your photos. A professional makeup artist that charges a fair rate will use nothing but high quality professional brands (mostly HD makeup) that will ensure you will look your best in person and in your photos and your makeup will stay on until you wash it off!
When looking for a makeup artist look at their photos and compare with other artists work. Their portfolio should show a variety of different makeup styles, photos should be modern not outdated. Thier photos should not be heavily photoshopped as that is a sign of bad makeup that needed heavy retouching! A lot of my photos are taken on my camera and not photoshopped so you can see the quality of my work! Photographers love working with me because they have less photo shopping to do which means you will pay less for that service and most likely get your photos quicker! (see this testimonial from a photographer I work with often: "I get relieved whenever I hear a bride-to-be is using you for makeup because I know they will be flawless and less work for me in photoshop! I always recommend you over other Makeup Artists because it takes me hours to edit your work compared to weeks with other's!" Karen Ziemkowski - Photographer, Atlanta, GA (formerly Ft. Lauderdale, FL)
Interview the makeup artist and ask if they do hair and makeup full time or is this just something they do on the side for fun. This is my full time job! I am booked with weddings almost every weekend (sometimes double booked) as well as commercial and photo shoots during the week. My portfolio is updated weekly as I get new photos from my weddings!
Q: Do you add gratuity or charge any hidden fees?
A: No! Gratuities are appreciated for satisfactory service, but I do not add gratuity to the contract as I feel that is a personal choice and left to your discretion. I also do not add additional fees to bring additional artists on the wedding day. I work with several of the best hair and makeup artists in South Florida and can accommodate any size wedding party, even multiple weddings on the same day!
Q: What if my artist suddenly becomes ill or has a emergency on my wedding day?
A: Having a large team of artists also ensures that in the rare event that myself or the makeup artist assigned to your wedding has an unavoidable emergency, a backup artist can be sent in place. This has only happened twice in my 10+ years of doing weddings! I have a team of very reliable artists whom are all hand picked by me to ensure that they uphold the very strict policies and work ethics I have in place. I have had many brides call or email me frantic because their makeup artist cancelled on them last minute! This will not happen with DgPro Makeup And Hair! I do everything by contract outlining all details as to the date, time, location etc. promised to protect you from this happening! I have a very clear cancellation policy as well should you need to cancel due to unforseen circumstances.
Q: When should I book my trial session/ consultation?
A: Ideally you should book your trial session a minimum 3-6 months out from the wedding day if at all possible. There are several reasons for this:
1. You want to give yourself enough time to find the right hair/ makeup artist for you. The last thing you want is to have your trial session only a few weeks before the wedding and end up not happy with the hair/ makeup artist you chose. Finding a good makeup artist at the last minute is not easy!
2. You also want to give yourself time to get your hair and/or skin in prime condition for the wedding day. Your hair/ makeup artist can consult you on what to use and how to take care of your hair and skin in the months before the wedding to get them in the best possible condition so that you are the beautiful radiant bride you want to be!
3. You may realize at the trial session you need hair extensions to achieve the look you want. You want to give yourself time to find the right ones or order them if you have to. I offer free consultations to my brides who are thinking of getting extensions or who are unsure if they need them and want to have them before doing the trial. I can suggest a good local beauty supply that carries 100% Remy human hair extensions in a wide range of styles/ colors. I can also order them for you at 10% off from "Hair Comes the Bride". I don't pressure sell to anyone, it is just a service I can offer should you need help with that.
Q: What should I expect at my consultation?
A: I’ll work with you to ‘dial-in’ your exact look ~ whether soft and natural or bold and glamorous. During the trial session, the bride and I will discuss make-up styles, colors, intensity and the design that will achieve her intended wedding day look. After shooting a before picture, the application begins incorporating all the ideas discussed; I will be explaining as I go; not just what I’m doing, but the ‘why’ and suggesting options. When the bride is happy with the finished product, we’ll shoot a few after pictures. The after picture along with your before picture, will be sent to you via e-mail. These photos can be used by the bride or I to be further inspired to make any additions or changes. Please remember that nothing is set in stone and if you decide at a later time you want something to look a bit different....a touch more or less eyeliner for instance....anything can be changed. It is your day and your look should be exactly as you want it. Things can get lost in translation and everyone has a different idea of what something should look like. So, don't be afraid to ask your hair/ makeup artist to tweak things or make any changes you want. They should accommodate any request you make.
Q: Should I bring inspiration pictures to my trial session?
A: Yes, and you can send them to me before the trial session as well which is recommended. However, please be realistic about what you see in the pictures online. Every picture of brides/ models online are taken with professional cameras with filters and then photoshopped. Every line is erased and features changed so that they look "perfect". Some people have a false conception that they will look just like the models in the picture (in person) with airbrush makeup. Please have a realistic expectation that your features may be different and any makeup and/ or hair style you choose may look a bit different on you. A professional can make adjustments to any makeup and/ or hair style to suit your face shape and features to bring out the most beautiful you!
Q: What type of makeup products do you use?
A: I use the very best available consumer and professional products appropriate for you, depending on your skin type. They are hypoallergenic, fragrance, and oil free. I carry many different consumer and professional makeup brands in my kit. I don’t like to just stick to one name brand; the products are chosen for their ability not their name recognition. I work from an extensive palette – including: Temptu airbrush makeup, Cinema Secrets, Graftobian, Kryolan, Ben Nye, Lorac, Smashbox, Stila, Bobbi Brown, Clinique, M.A.C, Makeup Forever, Lancome, Nars, Urban Decay and other professional brands. I do not use drug store brands that will not hold up all day or may run and smudge or rub off on your groom or guests (with the exception of Maybelline waterproof mascara which is an old Makeup Artist favorite that works!) Most of my skin care products are from Kiehl’s and Neutrogena — recommended for people with problem or sensitive skin. I do not favor, stock any cosmetics or have any individual products to sell to you.
Q: How long will my makeup last?
A: Using a variety of professional waterproof and water resistant products and along with studio application techniques, your makeup will last all day and into the night. Airbrush makeup is the recommended makeup for brides by wedding Makeup Artists as it is smudgeproof, waterproof and humidity proof! It will not rub off, run, smudge or fade.....it stays on with little to no touch-ups required until you wash it off! You will be in your makeup anywhere from 10-12 hours you want the assurance that it will last! Expect the usual minor touch-ups such as replenishing your lipstick or blotting or powdering shine from your face once in a while (if oily). I will supply you with a touch-up kit with the lipstick and gloss chosen at your trial session as well as hairspray, blotting tissues and a few other emergency items. It is also a good idea to invest in a pressed powder compact compatible with your skin tone if you are prone to oiliness.
Q: My mom’s/mother-in-law’s/bridesmaid’s day-to-day look is a bit too much (or too little), and I’m afraid that if they insist on doing their own look, it will take away from the style I envision. I want to include them – how can I do this without hurting their feelings or burdening them with extra expenses?
A: The best solution is for you to “treat” these individuals to their beauty services for the wedding, and to stress how important it is to you that the look of everyone in the wedding party is coordinated and cohesive. Also, consider paying for makeup and hairstyling (or a portion thereof) as a bridesmaid/wedding party gift. Your photos and video will look better if everyone in your immediate wedding party have professional beauty services, rather than having some girls ‘with’ and some ‘without.’ The last thing you want is for some girls to have too much makeup or look washed out in photos. I have gift certificates available for those wanting to "gift" hair and/or makeup services for the bridal party. It is a nice touch to give them as part of their "attendant" gift and includes a lip gloss in a color of your choosing and a gift bag!
